Here at M.C. Perry Elementary School,
we are in our second year of a five year Continuous School Improvement
(CSI) plan. There are two main goals for our students and we will be
introducing a variety of classroom interventions to help our school
achieve these higher standards.
Essence of Goal 1: Reading and writing
are reciprocal in nature; each cna be used to support learning and
achievement in the other. Students will become better readers through
writing by using various organizational structures, higher-order thinking
skills and writing strategies. Students will become better writers
by improving reading comprehension to aid in the understanding of text.
Interventions:
- Shared writing - The teacher and students
compose text together, with both contributing their thoughts and
ideas to the process, while the teacher acts as a scribe, writing
the text as it is composed..
- Read aloud - The teacher reads aloud
several texts each day, both fiction and nonfiction, in order to
model inflection, pacing, fluency, and specific reading strategies.
Read alouds are also a valuable way to help students expand their
oral vocabularies and build prior knowledge of a topic.
Essence of Goal 2: Inquiry is the art
and science of asking and answering questions. It includes the ability
to formulate a question which can be answered through observation,
data analysis, research and/or experimentation to seek an answer.
Interventions:
- KWL charts - Teachers activate students'
prior knowledge by asking them what they already know,
then students set goals specifying what they want to
learn, and after reading, students discuss what they have learned.
This is a form of graphic organizer.
- STEPS problem solving model - Students
use this strategy to solve problems across the curriculum: See the
problem, Think of solutions, Elect (choose)
a solution, Perform the solution, and Share the
outcomes with others.
